INTERVIEW WITH FASHION DESIGNER JOSE ORTIZ

How did your passion for design start and how did your creative process work?

My passion for design started back in my teenage years. I was not too sure what I wanted to do but it had to be in the art industry. During my junior year in high school I registered late for classes and when it came to choosing an elective, fashion design was the only one available; I was not happy I had to take it. After a few days of class I felt a big connection and found that it was meant for me. I was able to use my art skills and creativity to make my designs wearable for people.

My creative process works by choosing a point in my life. After inspiration strikes, I start researching the color and design trends for the season. Afterwards I start sketching the designs and search for fabrics that I would like to use. Finally the making of the patterns and the sewing begins.

How do you think the fashion industry is helping independent designers?

I think the fashion industry has definitely grown. As of today there are far more opportunities given to independent and new designers. The amount of fashion shows available to enter are far greater. There is also the advantage that we now have social media to market our brands and get them out to the world to see.

Can you tell us a little bit about your references and inspirations for your garments?

The inspirations for my designs are mostly from experiences in my life. I tend to tell my story through every collection and how that helped me overcome it and become a better person. My most recent collection represented the death of my mother; the collection was named “Libby: Eternal Garden”.

Another recent collection that was inspired by a moment in time in which everything had no meaning and the metamorphosis of the subconscious gave rise to the force within to desire its creation; this collection was named “Chroniko Diastima”

Can you describe your client’s personality in a few words?

The personality of my customer is not afraid to be who they are. Making a fashion statement without fear and showing their true self.

What do you think it’s your best-selling piece of MOZZE Designs?

My best selling piece is a tulle sheer skirt I designed for my SS22 collection. It is constructed in white tulle and shows three tiers of pink gathered tulle. This skirt has been a hit since it hit the runway in April 2022.

What do you think about the opportunity of selling your products on online platforms, you think it might be a good showcase for your work and your future?

Yes definitely a good showcase for the future. I think online platforms and social media is the best way to showcase your work. You can reach thousands of new clients throughout the world. I am constantly posting photos of my work on social media and platforms. This has grown my business a lot when it comes to reaching new customers and just putting my brand out in the world.

What does the fashion industry need more to grow up and what can be done better for this?

The fashion industry needs to grow in or become more open to the new designers that are starting their brands. Give the opportunity for designers to showcase or be recognized more often in their social platforms. Most of the brands being mentioned and talked about are the same brands for years. What can be done is have a certain platform where the customers are able to choose what designers or brands can showcase their work. Hear more about the customers needs.

What is the long term goal for you as a designer and what is the main mission?

The long term goal for me as a designer is being able to dress all kinds of people and be known globally for my designs. The main mission is to dress red carpet celebrities and any person whole is unique in their own way.

What are the most interesting social platforms that can help your label?

One of the most interesting social platforms I have seen to help with my label is Instagram. This social platform is a fast growing and innovative way to reach new customers around the world. Another social platform that I have seen to be very trendy is Tik Tok. I have been uploading new videos through this platform and it has been very successful.

Can you tell us what was a recent important project?

My new collection for Fall Winter 2022. The concept for our Fall/ Winter 2022 collection is nostalgia.

The name of the collection is Saudade; Ephibic Tempo.

Saudade is a deep emotional state of nostalgic or profound melancholic longing, it’s a sense of loneliness and incompleteness. Ephebic is relating to youth and tempo to the period of time. Playing into today’s youths nostalgia of the early 2000’s is where this collection lies; it is an homage to the emo/punk styles that were popular at the turn of the century. The collection can be summarized by emo/punk meets couture. It features studs, skulls and chains with a soft touch of elegance. The color palette features dark tones and vibrant nostalgic hues; the core colors such as orchid flower, lazuli blue, dark oak and lava falls. It emphasizes jade, honeycomb and nosegray. Our pieces are composed out of shiny bold leathers, mesmerizing essence of lace and shimmering velvet.

This collection was recently premiered at Kansas City Fashion Week in September 2022.
