“Sustainability and the future of the fashion industry”. Before starting this course, the fashion industry seemed like a fairytale, ripped straight out of a children’s book. Before starting this course, we had more answers than ever to the topic posed. “We should make ethical choices, don’t support fast fashion, reduce, reuse, recycle…”
However, the more we learn about the industry, the more we can see the duality in the fantasy of it all. There is an air of glamour, success, and dreams but for someone else, it is unremunerated labour, toxic work conditions, exposure to life-threatening materials and so much more. They are undoubtedly sides of the same coin, but only one seems to always land face-side up. As students who are just joining this industry, the duality and its irony is not lost on us.
