INTERVIEW WITH MACARENA GO, designer of GO Clothed Company
KREEP: How did your passion for design start and how your creative process work?
I have always been a very creative person and fashion has always had my attention as well as architecture and the idea of creating personal realities. A lot of things inspire me, so in that way, I am a bit chaotic when I start thinking about a new collection because most of the times I have to tell myself to stop thinking and start creating because is like if my mind can’t stop bringing new options and possibilities.
KREEP: How fashion nowadays helps and motivate you to become a fashion designer?
What most motivates me about fashion is that it has many faces and is always open to new talents, and also, that is more and more diverse and inclusive.
KREEP: Can you tell us a little bit about your references for the last collection?
My last collection was “Parénquima”, my 2020 Spring-Summer Haute Couture proposal, as well as my Ready to Wear collection. The first one is a limited collection of five unique big straw hats, inspired by natural textures and volumes, in which I have played with fibers directly, looking for organic and natural movements and forms.
The base of every collection we do is our philosophy of finding the balance between innovation and craftsmanship, so as to keep the classic essence of hats but using new techniques, forms and materials, even though if there are not traditionally used in millinery.
KREEP: Are you sick of people talking about millennials? Do you see yourself as a designer for young people, a new generation?
I must say that is something I don’t think too much about because I don’t understand why is so important to put names to generations. I believe in the individual’s uniqueness. My designs are for everyone who has their own style and feel free to wear what makes them happy, no matter if they are young or older. But I must say that even though my hats can have a more disruptive design that can be more attractive to young people, most of my inquiries are from middle age women, so I think they can be wear by everyone.
KREEP: How fashion competitions can change the business industry? Will you apply at some in the future?
Yes, I will apply even though is not easy to find competitions for accessory designers. I think fashion competitions can give more visibility to emerging talents and brands, opening doors that without notoriety aren’t easy to reach. Other design disciplines have competitions and work very well, because they empower the people in the industry to think outside the box, so I think this can be very positive for the industry.
KREEP: How do you want people to feel when they wear your brand?
What I want people to feel when they wear GO Clothed is themselves. The only thing I want my hats to give them is the confidence and authenticity to show themselves as they are or as they want to be seen. Their personality is what brings to life my designs.
KREEP: What do you think it’s your best-selling piece from your last collection?
My last collection on sale is “Caliptra”, and from that collection the one that selling the most, are the “Black Lava” hat and “Desert Safari” Pith Helmet.
KREEP: What do you think about the opportunity of selling your products on online platforms, you think it might be a good showcase for your work and your future?
We actually have our own online shop and also a space at Flying Solo NY showroom, and I must say that at this moment our brand works better in our physic space than online, but maybe because hats are a more personal buy or because we are still working on our online strategy, I don’t know… but yes, I think that for a young brand, that needs to be seen, being in known online platforms can give more visibility and opportunities so I think they are a good option.
KREEP: What young designers need right now from fashion industry to grow up?
I think the fashion industry should protect more young designers in many aspects. But firstly, from bigger brands, because we know a lot of cases of young designers that have to see how a, more or less, different version of their design or idea walks under another name. I am the first one that knows that fashion has almost everything invented, and that is common to do versions of other designs, but is it fair to do it with a young designer? We all know how hard this industry is, and how many people give up during the journey, so it would be great to feel a bit protected by the industry you dream of being part off.
KREEP: List us three favorite designers / icons who inspire you.
Ellie Saab, Stéphane Rolland and Iris van Herpen.
